Black EnoughI’m just going to straight up say that if Black Enough, an anthology of stories from a number of amazing authors, edited by Ibi Zoboi isn’t on your TBR, it should be. The lack of understanding and empathy in this country just astounds me sometimes and I basically see it as a duty to make concerted efforts as much as possible to ensure that everyone knows what life is like for people who aren’t like them. I consciously make decisions to read diverse authors, to understand their viewpoints and I still don’t feel like I do it often enough. I can only intrinsically understand as much as I’ve experienced myself and so, if I were to not seek out the written works of those with different experiences than myself, my knowledge base and understanding of the world would be incomplete, fishbowled. And I frankly do not want to be that goldfish in a bowl, ignorantly content with my lot because I don’t know any better. That is an awful place to be in and it can often lead to being an awful person.

So, this book should be on your TBR. It should be there no matter what. Diverse authors aren’t heard enough, aren’t read enough, and they will open your eyes–hopefully–to a world of new and important understandings. And, unfortunately, I don’t think you or I will ever read enough to fully understand. But the important thing is to make the effort as often as you can. And maybe then we can build a world in which everyone’s voices are heard and the sample is not overflowing with only one type of voice.

Let me know your thoughts on this one in the comments.
