The first thing I have to say about The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty is wow, that’s a lot. I feel like the synopsis gives a whole bunch away and I really hope there’s more to the story than what was shown in the blurb…some sort of twist or something to really make it unique. But at the same time, what was described sounds wondrously exciting. Not to mention that I am honestly such a major sucker for anything that exists as a retelling of a story that I know well and adore. As The Kingdom of Copper does seem to be a retelling, there’s just about nothing that could keep me from adding this exceedingly fun-sounding novel to my TBR this year. Plus, on top of all that, the cover is exceedingly eye catching and this is definitely one that I would love to see on my actual bookshelf.
What appears to be, but is not explicitly stated as, a gender-bent Aladdin retelling, the story focuses on a young girl who has accidentally summoned a powerful djinn. She is soon taken away from her home in Cairo and brought to a kingdom and court that had once been ruled by her family. As she navigates her dangerous circumstances, the current rulers of the nation, a young almost prince Ali is working against his father. Not everything fits the Aladdin story, of course, but the similarities do seem to be there.
