your lightI was pleasantly surprised by Your Light by Jillian Aversa and illustrated by Marina Lezcano. A request made due to the unique nature of being a musical story, I was incredibly curious to see how such a book was written. And while I had my doubts, especially considering the book was in a PDF format and I had no understanding for how the music would transfer over at the time, I really did enjoy this book at the end of the day. There’s certainly room for some improvement, I think, but for the most part it was an incredibly cute and intriguing bedtime story for kids.

The story follows a young rabbit headed to sleep at the end of the day when a shooting star falls from the sky. The little rabbit makes the decision, then, to strike out and search for the star to keep it for himself. Thus begins a vividly beautiful journey through which the rabbit travels to the star and collects it up into a glass jar. The majority of the story is told through the most gorgeous of illustrations whereas the text is merely the lyrics of the song.

As far as the song goes, it’s generally pretty hard to pick up on it by simply reading the story. You don’t have the tune to go off of and it’s not a well-known one that you can guess at. I feel like a fair amount is lost if you’re simply reading the story without listening to the song and so the fact that the song isn’t readily available within the book (as a CD or a small speaker that plays it at the push of a button) does take away a little bit from the story.

What’s nice, however, is that the website is easily accessible and the song is available via a youtube video in which they show the pages from the story as it sings. You can also download your own free copy, which is nice, especially in the possible (but probably not super likely) event that the website potentially is taken down at some point in the future. Overall, I did really like the book, but it definitely does need the song alongside it.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
