For as long as I can remember I have loved the story of Oliver Twist and so, coupled with my absolutely overwhelming adoration for retellings, it’s really no wonder that I’m pretty desperate to get my hands on a copy of Corpse and Crown by Alisa Kwitney. Of course, I haven’t read the first book in this series, but since the novels appear to be more companion than continuation, I think I’ll be all set to read this one if I can get myself to do so. I might just end up reading the first one prior to picking this one up since it’s also on my TBR. Hopefully they will both end up being as amazingly wonderful as they sound because the more I come across Kwitney’s novels, the more I want to read them. In a weird way, I tend to shy away from the covers and titles that Kwitney’s novels have–dead has never really been my thing or something I’m the least bit interested in. But for the stories that are described in the synopses of these books, I’m definitely making an exception.
Though inspired by Oliver Twist, Corpse and Crown definitely has some unique differences. Main character Agatha DeLacey is a nursing student whose journey to London has resulted in her uncovering a rather upsetting secret about the “Bio-mechanicals” of the country. I’m not entirely sure what those are, but the inclusion of technology within a very different alternate universe of the world sounds utterly fascinating. It almost gives you a feeling of Frankenstein when you read it. I’m very curious to see where this story ends up going,
