an assassin's guide to love and treasonI have a small confession. The cover for An Assassin’s Guide to Love and Treason by Virginia Boecker isn’t my favorite cover in the world. But I still find it to be one of the covers that I would give an up vote if asked to rate it, determining whether or not I liked it. There’s something about Victorian-era clothing that I’ve always found really appealing. While I may not be overly fond of the ridiculousness that is the neck piece that the girl is wearing, the dress overall is gorgeous and the boy’s outfit easily catches my eye. As I look at this cover, the first thing I find myself doing is trying to determine which one of the two characters on the front, or both, will be the assassin. Of course, it’s difficult to tell at first due to the placement of the book’s title, but if you look closely you’ll see that the girl is holding a knife which ultimately leads me to believe that she is the one who will be the assassin in the novel.

This is one of the few simple covers that I’ve featured as I typically prefer the ones that are a bit more involved, but there’s something appealing about the way this cover has been put together. The two characters almost look as though they’re posing for an old photo, with the dark brown background and the clothing really sending home that message. I love the placement of the title. and how it is slanted across the characters, especially in the way it is almost parallel to the knife she is holding.

How do you feel about the cover for An Assassin’s Guide to Love and Treason? Do you like it? Love it? Hate it? Not care? Is it the sort of cover that would endear you to picking up the book or nah? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
