The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork is one of my all-time favorite books. I’ve always been a fan of retellings and I’ve always been a fan of the story of The Nutcracker, which I think ultimately really set me up to love this book in the first place. What I find most amusing about it all is that I’ve always eagerly read through any retelling of this story that I can get my hands on and loved them all regardless simply due to the fact that it was all I had of the world. But now, I think, I will be hard pressed to find a better retelling of this story than the one within this fantastical novel. Whereas before, with each new version that I read I found myself liking the new one the most, I imagine if I stumble across another it will have a lot to live up to in order to ever be a better read than Wallwork’s re-imagining of the tale is.

The Enchanted Sonata features an orphaned Prince eventually turned into a Nutcracker by one of the most interesting villains I’ve ever read in my life. He is sent by fairies to Clara Stahlbaum, a young pianist with great dreams and an immense crush. Soon they are both whisked away to his world in which the kingdom is in grave danger both from the giant rats and the villain who has turned all the children and all the soldiers into toys. A wonderful retelling of an amazing story that also includes a mixture of the pied piper (it’s brilliant, I promise), The Enchanted Sonata is not a novel you want to miss out on.
