Perhaps it’s fate–though really, it’s probably just irony–that somehow I bring up The Little Mermaid in my last post and the next thing I know I see an announcement on Twitter regarding the fact that Halle Bailey has just been cast as Ariel for Disney’s live-action remake! Sadly, but not surprisingly, this has already brought the racists out of their holes. But, I won’t spend a lot of time talking there because, really, those people are trash who don’t really deserve to be discussed. Frankly, I think it’s ludicrous that anyone would judge this film for the ethnicity of the actress playing the main character.
And though Aladdin is my favorite, The Little Mermaid is my second favorite, so I did want to take a minute to weigh in.
I do have to say that I am so thrilled for all the girls out there who now have the opportunity to see themselves in a character I have had the privilege of seeing myself in for basically my whole life. It’s well beyond time that casting like this was made. And really, all that matters in the long run is that this girl is capable of accurately portraying the character she was cast for. And since she was cast in the role, and my experience with Disney has led me to the conclusion that they are generally quite adept at choosing exceptional cast members for their films, I see no reason to believe she won’t be an exceptional Ariel.
After how much I loved Aladdin this year, I am immensely looking forward to seeing one of my all-time Disney movies adapted for live action. Though, admittedly, I think I am a little worried about the shark scene. Frankly even the animated version was exceedingly scary to me. I can’t even imagine how terrifying that will be in live action.
I’m excited to see this one when it comes out. =)
