I laughed when I first came across Monsters are Afraid of Babies by Nicholas Tana, illustrated by Jessica Abbott and Elise Leutwyler. And then I thought about how perfect it would have been for my boyfriend’s nephew when he was getting a little sister. This is such a clever way of introducing the idea of a younger sibling to kiddos who might not be too eager or happy about the thought of sharing mom and dad with a new baby.

One of my favorite pieces about this children’s book was how it incorporated many of the not-so-great aspects of a baby in a way that portrayed them as good. You see, the monsters are terrified of babies because of the messes that they make, the screeching that they do, and those nasty, smelly, dirty diapers! And so while these pieces all can be very frustrating to deal with when you have a new sibling, they’re still good because they scare away all the monsters.

This is definitely a funny story and one that offers children who might not be able to fully comprehend the benefits of a sibling just yet a vivid reason to appreciate the new baby. Obviously this isn’t a true fix it for sibling rivalries and an only child feeling as though they are losing all of their parents’ attention. But it is a brilliant and wonderful way of making the new baby seem a little less daunting for younger kids who perhaps aren’t feeling super excited about their little sibling.
