On the one hand, I think this book is brilliant. I’m always eager to read anything that can expand my vocabulary; I was an avid dictionary reader as a child, if you can believe it. But I have to admit that What’s That Word falls a bit short of what I think would work as an educational resource.
Efficiency
The fact of the matter is that there are many more efficient books and tools one can use to develop their vocabulary than this particular book. In essence, while you’re certainly bound to learn from it, I don’t think this is the kind of book you learn from quickly. This is especially if you’re reading it in ebook format. And, in the end, this is all due to the answer set up. Whereas more effective tools provide the answer fairly quickly, this one requires a lot of flipping to get to them.
In the end, I found myself really just reaffirming knowledge I already had and feeling like the work to learn new vocabulary made the book, overall, less efficient and effective. And that really is my biggest complaint about this one. I think, ultimately, that this is still an incredibly useful book. But, if I’m being completely honest, I would probably look elsewhere to build my educational level in this topic area.
