The oldest children’s book you have – a book you’ve held onto since childhood.

I’ve got a lot of books that could potentially fit this category. Most of them are all packed away at my parent’s house, but I’ve kept a few (though not for any reason in particular). This one I’ve had for longer than I can remember. It was my mother’s before me and while I haven’t read it in a long while, I keep my battered copy tucked away on my bookshelf happily.

The book is called Curtain Going Up by Debra Weiss and illustrated by James R. Odbert. It was published in 1983 and chronicles the experience of a young dancer who replaces an injured performer and makes her debut in the theater. I really loved it as a kid.

  1. I didn’t keep my books from when I was a child I wish I did though. I still have my old copy of Black Beauty not sure when it was published but wit has an note “merry christnas 1958” to a child from their aunt and uncle I added a note when I bought it as child. “This book is 42 1996 the price was 25p from a car boot sale. 2003 aged: 48” obviously the book is older cant find a publishing date mustve pre dated them. A few years ago I got my famous five books back and I will not part with these books but I wish I’d kept my Willow Farm books. I hunt for them online sometimes with the old covers don’t know if I’d read them again cos they might not be as good as I remember. I buy old classics now and I’m so glad I have Black Beauty and the little note ill never part with it though I cant remember the last time I read it. Its sad. Weird how I kept that but not my other favourites

    1. Oh my gosh, I love books with inscriptions in them! I honestly keep ahold of any that I find. I’ve been known to thumb through the books at thrift stores and buy any with inscriptions.

That’s really cool that you have some of your childhood books. I’m fortunate enough to have had a mother who kept all my books from when I was young so I still have most of them.
