100 cupboardsThe cover for 100 Cupboards by N. D. Wilson is deliciously dark, which frankly makes the fact that I love it a ginormous surprise (it seems I’m on a roll with darker novels lately). But, honestly, there’s so much to love about this that I simply cannot help myself. I mean, could you? I don’t know much about the book past having just briefly read the blurb for it, a tale of a room with a hundred cupboards that are, mysteriously, portals to other realms and will likely lead the 12-year-old main character on a grand number of adventures. I wonder if these adventures will be scary and dangerous as the cover suggests they will be. The synopsis didn’t say. But, with the bumps in the night and those rather scary-looking eyes peeking out over the now open door of his own cupboard–one that appears to have been locked–I think this novel is turning out to be at least marginally creepy if not completely so. I wonder what that creature in the cupboard is, honestly. My initial guess was that it’s a cat-creature of some sort, but then I wondered if that dark line in the corner coming out of the shadows is a leg or a chain, but if it’s a leg then maybe the creature is a giant spider?

In any case, I’m thoroughly fascinated by this cover. The various cupboards are so cool to look at and they definitely draw you in instantly, filling you with a bunch of questions regarding the nature of the cupboards. I know that I, without having read the synopsis, never would have guessed that they were portals but instead would have assumed they were some manner of keeping interesting creatures. But, regardless, I’m really curious to see how that all plays out. The thing is, I love everything about the artwork, but I’m not really sold on the text. I think the placement of the title was poorly chosen, but there also isn’t a whole lot of room for it anywhere anyway. I do, however, think the chosen font was pretty brilliant and matches my picture for how the book will go. I just don’t care for where they were placed.

What are your thoughts on this cover? What do you like most? What do you like least? Do you agree or disagree with my thoughts? Take a moment to let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear!
