a soldier and a liarI am not sure why there is a war, but there is a war in A Soldier and a Liar by Caitlin Lochner. I have no idea what the war is about or why this group of kids must work together in order to achieve peace. Why are they so important to it, I wonder? The thing about Lochner’s novel that really grabs you is the fact that the synopsis actually leaves you with a bunch of questions and curiosity about the world and the kids involved. You know who the main character is right off the bat, so it’s not going to be one of those books where all the kids are main characters. There are four kids involved, described as super-powered teens and, something I’m a little annoyed about, the main character is the only girl. Something tells me that this book wouldn’t pass the Bechdel test. And while I do really hope I’m wrong about that, the fact that it’s one girl and three guys definitely gives me pause here. Then again, I’m open to being wrong because one of the characters is named AI and perhaps they’re a girl? Your thoughts?

A Soldier and a Liar centers around Lai Cathwell, who manipulates her own arrest in order to avoid serving in the war and the three boys with whom she ends up working. All the kids have some sort of special power and are put together with the expectation that they will save the world. Described as an action packed debut, I’m looking forward to reading A Soldier and a Liar and it is definitely on my TBR. The premise sounds quite intriguing and hopefully the book outshines my expectations rather than living up to all of them. Especially since I have my misgivings about the team at this current point in time.

What did you think of this book? Are you considering reading it? Adding it to your TBR? Or do you think you’d rather not read this one? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments! Happy reading, everyone!
