the black coatsHonestly, my initial reaction to The Black Coats by Colleen Oakes is literally just wow. Put as simply as possible, this novel sounds amazing. And it covers some really important topics centered around men’s treatment of women and the line between justice and revenge. Honestly, I expect to have incredibly strong feelings about this book. And I imagine that others will as well. There’s really no question in my mind, whatsoever, that I will be going out of my way to get myself a copy of this book as soon as possible. I actually just got a Barnes and Noble gift card recently and I can think of no better book to spend it on. If this novel turns out to be as amazing as I expect, it will have been well worth it. And, as far as the reviews go thus far, it seems like The Black Coats really does live up to everyone’s expectations.

In a world where a group of women have developed a society where they exact justice upon the men who have hurt women, be it through predatory and blackmailing behavior or for the egregious crime of actually raping someone, our main character has just been invited to join them. With men to serve justice to in her own life, the question of whether or not she will join them isn’t really a question at all. But when it comes down to it, there’s a reason why people emotionally invested in a situation are not usually the ones to exact punishments. And how long can one do so without crossing the line toward revenge? Now, I personally am not all that against getting revenge on the men (and sometimes women) who have done such terrible things…but, I’m definitely curious to see where this book takes things.
