the first true thingThe First True Thing by Claire Needell initially looks like a book I wouldn’t be interested in reading at all. I don’t like the cover, just to start with. The text is awful, the bike tire is just such a not fun thing to look at. Then there’s the rainy background that I just couldn’t care less about. This looks like the sort of cover you’d see on a crummy crime novel that I, never in a million years, would be excited to read. I honestly just hate everything about this book cover and would seriously want to beg the publisher to pick something, anything, else. At the end of the day I think the novel has a lot of potential to be amazing and this utterly stupid looking cover really takes a lot away from that, at least for me.

As Marcelle goes through a rehab program for her prior drug use after a terrible accident, one of her best friends, Hannah, who had also fallen into very similar dangerous and self-destructive habits sends her a text asking her to cover for her. The next thing she knows, Hannah has disappeared and as far as everyone else is concerned, the last person to have seen her is Marcelle. Stuck in a web of lies and the ever looming danger of Hannah’s situation, Marcelle is left to determine whether it is more important to cover for her friend and keep the lie going, or to admit to her lies and work to save Hannah.

I’m looking forward to reading this book. It seems to be a rather interesting commentary on drug use, getting clean, and the ramifications of the friends with self-destructive tendencies who may end up bringing a person back into troublesome activities.

What do you think of this book? Is it something you’d be interested in reading? One you’d rather not pick up? Let me know in the comments!
